Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) can extend a local area network (LAN) over the Internet to remote networks and remote client machines. A VPN uses the Internet to route LAN traffic from one location to another by encapsulating the data inside encrypted IP packets. The encrypted packets are unreadable by intermediary Internet devices and can contain any kind of network communications - such as file and printer sharing, e-mail, remote procedure calls, and database access.

VPNs can be setup using server computers, firewalls or routers. Client access to the VPN can be made using client-side VPN software or by connecting to an ISP that supports the VPN protocol.

VPNs solve the problem of accessing private servers over the Internet through a combination of IP encapsulation, cryptographic authentication and data payload encryption.

IP Encapsulation
IP encapsulation provides a way to protect the data while in transit between the remote client and the private LAN. Computers outside the VPN should not be able to snoop on the traffic exchanged between the remote client and private server or be able to insert their own data into the communication stream. This is accomplished by creating what people refer to as a private and protected "tunnel" through the public Internet. When an IP packet contains another IP packet this is called IP encapsulation, and it provides a mechanism to refer to a host within a private network when a direct network connection may not exist. When this is combined with data encryption then we've effectively created our virtual tunnel.

Cryptographic Authentication
Cryptographic Authentication is used to securely validate the identity of the remote client so that the private LAN can determine what level of security should be applied to that user. VPNs use the authentication process to determine whether or not a remote user can participate in the encrypted tunnel, and for exchanging the public key that will subsequently be used for data encryption.

Data Payload encryption uses a public key to encrypt the data field of the IP encapsulated packet. That is, data payload encryption is exactly like normal IP except that the data has been encrypted. It does not encrypt the header information, so details of the private network can be gleaned by analyzing the header information.

Advantages and Disadvantages
Compared to wide Area Networks (WANs), VPNs offer some advantages but, also, present some disadvantages.

 Advantages - cheaper than WANs - easier to setup than WANs Disadvantages - slower than WANs - less reliable than WANs - less secure than isolated WANs

Example
Although there are a number of ways to configure a VPN here is an example of one scenario that is fairly common -- an employee wishes to work from home and exchange data between their home machine and a private web server on the corporate network. There are two important processes here -- the process of negotiating and building a VPN session, and the process of protecting and handling the data within an existing VPN connection. Here I'll briefly describe the latter and leave the former as a potential topic for a future article.

Suppose we have the following:
(a) a VPN client with a public IP address of 66.123.77.196 and a private IP address of 192.168.0.202 (provided by the corporation's dhcp server).
(b) a VPN server on the corporate network with two interfaces -- a public interface to the Internet that uses 168.156.192.75 and an interface to the private network with an IP of 192.168.0.101
(c) a web server on the corporate network with an IP address of 192.168.0.102

Prior to creating a VPN session the client host has one interface and a connection to the Internet through an ISP. The client machine can communicate with any host on the Internet but can not access the web server on the private network 192.168.0.X. After the VPN session has been created then the client host has 2 interfaces -- the original interface to the Internet and a new VPN interface. The new VPN interface becomes the default gateway -- that is, all packets will initially travel through the new interface. However, the VPN interface is not a physical network card -- it doesn't physically connect to anything. The VPN interface is used to encrypt and encapsulate packets that are subsequently sent as the payload of a new, outer packet. It is the outer packet that is sent out over the Internet (using the original interface) to the corporate VPN server.

The inner packet will use the client's private IP of 192.168.0.202 as the source IP address and the web server's private IP of 192.168.0.102 as the destination address. The VPN client encrypts the data field of the inner packet and this inner packet then becomes the payload of an outer packet. The outer packet uses the client's public IP of 66.123.77.196 as the source IP address and the public interface of the VPN server (168.156.192.75) as the destination IP. The IP encapsulated packet is then sent to the ISP and out over the Internet.

When the IP encapsulated packet reaches the VPN server at the edge of the private network it will unwrap the inner packet and decrypt its data field. Since the VPN server also has an interface to the private network it will then be able to forward the inner packet to the destination web server. When data is sent from the web server back to the client then the process is reversed -- that is, the VPN server handles the encryption/encapsulation and the VPN client is responsible for unwrapping/decoding.

You will NOT, in most instances at least, be able to achieve the pretzel-like contortions of the masters in the pictures. However, most people will be able to increase flexibility and strength while decreasing the negative effects of arthritis by regular, consistent practice of yoga.

Almost any low impact exercise program from swimming, bike riding, and walking to weightlifting and bodybuilding (yes, I said weightlifting and bodybuilding) will be beneficial for almost anyone afflicted with arthritis. In fact, according to treatment guidelines published by the American College of Rheumatology, exercise is considered to be an integral and effective part of any treatment for arthritis, whether it is rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis.

Exercise can contribute so much to the arthritic or non-arthritic individual that it is almost a given that anyone should participate in regular physical activity of some kind. However, relative to those with arthritis in particular, who often are already on their own downward spiral of decreasing physical strength, lack of energy, and decreasing endurance or stamina, exercise is a key element in combating the condition. People with arthritis tend to become more sedentary than the rest of the population in general, which, by the way, is having increasing problems with those outlined above AND obesity as well.

Regular moderate exercise of any kind seems to play a major role in promoting joint health, decreasing joint pain and discomfort, while reversing the problems with strength, endurance, and energy mentioned above. Regular exercise also contributes to a better sense of emotional and psychological well-being while enhancing immune system function as well.

Okay! I'm sold on exercise for arthritis, but what does yoga have to offer that other exercise programs do not?

first, let's get past the idea that you have to be incredibly flexible to do yoga. Nothing can be farther from the truth. In fact, the very attempt to execute the movement or achieve the position is one of the major factors in the efficacy of yoga. many people who practice yoga regularly cannot perform the yoga positions seen in the pictures in books, and it is not uncommon for props and straps to be used to help others achieve something similar to the position. People of all shapes, sizes, and weights do yoga regularly, and this includes many with arthritis as well.

Having said that, yoga and arthritis go well together because yoga, when done properly, is actually a very gentle yet effective exercise method. It is calming and helps relieve stress while providing the benefits of other exercise programs while also providing some of its own. Studies are always trying to shed more and more light upon the question of joint pain, and the different contributing factors. In a recent article in the Annals of Rheumatic Diseases by Bone and Tooper, looked at how prolonged exposure to repetitive activity at work contributes specifically to shoulder pain. In their study, they noted that population based studies suggest a lifetime prevalence of over 70 percent for neck and shoulder pain.

They found that shoulder pain was second only to back pain in workers compensation insurance claims. Their study also found that the risk of developing shoulder pain when starting a new job is related to the amount of over-the-head lifting and the monotonous nature of the work. They concluded that shoulder pain is a common problem among working age adults and is a large contributor to sick leave.

The study was able to identify some of the workplace factors that contribute to shoulder pain. The researchers were able to identify prolonged abnormal posture and repetition as significant contributors to shoulder pain. They also noted that more recent studies have considered the psycho-social influences such as monotony of work and the amount of stress might also contribute to shoulder pain.

In their conclusions, they call for more studies looking at psycho-social stressors as wells as repetative movement and how it can be modified in order to prevent further injuries to the shoulder in the workplace setting. Such a finding could greatly benefit the 70% of the population that suffers from some sort of work-induced joint pain.

How To Play Golf From Uneven Lies

hitting the ball from uneven lies is one of the hardest things to do in golf and is one of the reasons why golf is so hard. Once you get out on the course, it is not flat like the driving range, and in order to shoot low scores and save as many strokes as possible you must know how to play form uneven lies.

Today i’m going to focus on teaching you how to play when the ball is below your feet as well as when it is above your feet. The good news is that these shots are not all that hard once you make the proper setup adjustments!

Playing when the ball is below your feet:

When the ball is below your feet you will feel as if you have to lean way over and really stretch to reach the ball. This is the major mistake that most golfers make when playing this shot, they bend too far forward from the waist to get down to the ball. This totally changes their body angles in the shot and causes mishits. Instead of bending more forward at the waist to get down to the ball, you need to bend your knees until your club reaches the ball. The angle that you bend forward should be exactly the same as that of a regular shot. So, when the ball is below your feet, bend those knees to get down to the ball.

Playing when the ball is above your feet:

When the ball is above your feet you need to flex your knees a whole lot less, and you want to have the feeling of standing nice and tall. In addition, because the ball is now higher up the distance between you and the ball is a lot shorter. So you will need to choke up on the club. Making these 2 adjustments will put you in a good position to make your regular swing, although it will end up being a little flatter because the ball is up higher.

one thing to keep in mind when playing these shots is that you will tend to miss in a certain direction for each type of shot. When the ball is below your feet the tendency is the miss a little bit to the right. And likewise when the ball is above your feet you will tend to miss to the left, so aim accordingly!

How To Use The Yoga Ball

Golf's Four Most Common Rules

golf doesn't have a lot of rules, but you should know them. That's why it's good to review the rules periodically. I don't devote a golf lesson or a longer golf instruction session to the rules, but I mention them during my golf lessons. That way the student learns the rules without detracting from his or her golf lesson.

Below we examine five common rules. Adhere to them whenever you play. Also, don't forget about local course rules. All clubs have rules covering specific course areas. If you're playing a course for the first time, check out these rules beforehand. They may save you a stroke or two in a sticky situation. If you're playing a course for the umpteenth time, refresh your memory as to the local rules. They may have changed.

1. Water Hazards Golf's rules define a water hazard as "any sea, lake, pond, river, ditch, surface draining ditch, or other open water course (whether or not containing water), and anything of a similar nature." Courses mark water hazards with yellow stakes and lines. But the rules don't stop there, as I mention in my golf tips, they also discuss a lateral water hazard.

The rules define a "later water hazard" as part of a water hazard "so situated that it is not possible, or is deemed by the committee to be impracticable, to drop a ball behind the water hazard according to rule 26-1b." In other words, it's a water hazard that doesn't lie between the tee and the green. The course marks these off by red stakes or lines.

If you hit into water you have four remedies:

1. Play the ball as near as possible to the spot from which the original ball was played.

2. Drop a ball behind the water hazard, keeping the point at which the ball entered the water's edge, directly behind the hole and the spot where the ball is dropped. There's no limit to how far back the ball may be dropped, as long as the point of crossing lies between the drop and the hole.

3. Play the ball as it lies in the water hazard.

4. If a ball goes into a lateral water hazard, drop a ball away from the hazard, but within two club lengths of the point from which the ball last crossed the water. However, the ball can't come to rest any closer to the hole than the point at which the first ball crossed the hazard.

2. Hang Time
You're on the 7th green and you hit what your think is a great put. The line is good. The speed is good. And the break is good. It's a done deal, you think. But the ball stops just at the lip of the cup. How long can you wait for the ball to drop into the cup. According to rule 16-2, you can wait the time it takes you to reach the hole plus 10 seconds. By the way, there's no penalty for allowing a ball stay in the cup and letting the next player's ball land on it.

3. White Stakes
You tee off on the 9th hole. You pull the ball left pass some white stakes. White stakes on a course indicate out-of-bounds. You have only one option under rule 27-the dreaded stroke and distance penalty. Add a stroke and drop a ball as close as possible to where you last played. To keep play moving when you might be OB, play a provisional ball under rule 27-2. Keep in mind that a wall or other boundary can also mark OB under local rules. That's why you need to check local rules.

4. Lost Ball
On the 15th you hit a drive just to the left of the fairway in deep rough. You look for the ball but can't find it. You declare a lost ball. After hitting, you discover your original ball. If you declared a lost ball and you hit a second ball, the provisions of rule 27 apply. Once the ball is declared lost and another ball played you can't play the original ball. However, what if the first ball went in the hole?

If the ball goes in the hole, the first ball would be counted, even if you hit a second ball. The first rule of golf states: The Game of golf consists of playing a ball with a club from the teeing ground into the hole by a stroke or successive strokes in accordance with the Rules. The key words here are "into the hole." Once the first ball when in the hole, the hole was over for the player. Once you've done that, your play of that hole is considered finished. You've completed play of a hole as soon as your ball finds the cup

These four rules come into play fairly frequently. They won't necessarily change your golf handicap or eliminate your need for golf lessons, but they are good to know to enhance your knowledge of the game and avoid getting others mad for not knowing them.
